Advisory

Glenda Clark

She began debating in school and continued through university. After having children, she took a sabbatical. When she moved to Dubai in 2007, she was delighted to find students interested in debate through the World Scholars Cup. Recognising how transformative the experience was for young people, she joined a group of coaches and teachers to establish the Dubai Debate League in 2009.

Over the years, the league expanded to include more schools and additional Emirates. It eventually incorporated Gulf Debates as an annual tournament, giving the winning team an automatic pass to the trials for the UAE debate team.

In 2016, she joined a team of three coaches responsible for selecting, training, and managing the UAE debate team in preparation for the World Schools Debating Championship. By 2019, this evolved into a solo role with support from the dedicated debate coaches across the UAE.

She moved to Thailand in 2023, confident that the team was in safe hands with Bhavani, who has continued to lead them from strength to strength. Although there is no formal debate scene on the small island where she now lives, she is gradually nurturing interest among her current students.

She remains closely connected with Bhavani and continues to support the UAE debate team in any way she can. Debate is a lifelong passion for her. In a world of uncertainty and quick-fix solutions, she believes it is more important than ever for young people to learn how to form logical, coherent arguments and develop the listening skills needed to respond thoughtfully.
